In the 19th century, Zamindar Jadunath Chowdhury established the ornate Nagarpur Zamidar Bari in Nagarpur Upazila of Tangail. Built with aesthetic beauty on an area of about 54 acres, this zamindar house was where the first patriarch of the Chowdhury family, Jadunath Chowdhury, and his descendants Upendra Mohan Chowdhury, Jagadindra Mohan Chowdhury, and Shashanka Mohan Chowdhury ruled as zamindars. The Dhaleshwari river flows to the east and the Jamuna river to the west of the Nagarpur Chowdhury Bari. It is said that with the plan to decorate Nagarpur like Kolkata, Jadunath Chowdhury built this Chowdhury house in Nagarpur centered around the waterway between Nagarpur and Kolkata. Later, Upendra Mohan Chowdhury’s eldest son, Zamindar Satish Chandra Chowdhury, established schools, colleges, temples, charitable dispensaries, playgrounds, and markets in Nagarpur. In recognition of Satish Chandra Chowdhury’s philanthropic activities, the then British government conferred upon him the title of “Rai Bahadur”.
