Shalbon Buddha Bihar is located in Kotbari, Comilla district, and is well known as one of the ancient civilisations of Bangladesh. Since there were forests of Sal and Gajari trees in this region at that time, the vihara became known as Shalbon Vihara. Shalbon Vihara is somewhat similar to Paharpur Buddhist Vihara, though slightly smaller in size. While building a road in the Kotbari area in 1875, people witnessed the ruins of a building, which was then thought to be part of an ancient fort. In 1917, Nalinikanta Bhattasali, the principal of Dhaka Museum, observed Shalbon Buddha Bihar and expressed the opinion that it was Pattikera City. However, it is believed that this vihara was built in the late 7th century by Sribhavadeva, the fourth king of the Deva dynasty. It is known that six structures of Shalbon Vihara were constructed and reconstructed at various times. It is believed that by the 8th century, the central temple was built for the third time and general renovations of the vihara took place. Subsequently, in the 8th and 9th centuries, the vihara was renovated for the fourth and fifth times.
