Located in Sonarong village in Tongibari upazila, 10 kilometers from Munshiganj district, Sonarong Jora Moth is an ancient 18th-century archaeological site in Bangladesh. Although commonly known as a math (monastery), it is actually a pair of temples. According to the temple inscriptions, a Hindu merchant named Rupchandra built the large Kali temple in 1843 and the small Shiva temple in 1886, while a person named Shambhunath established the math in 1836. It is said that the funeral rites of Sri Rupchandra were performed in this temple. The octagonal Sonarong twin math, about 246 feet high, is renowned as the highest math in the Indian subcontinent. With walls built entirely of lime and mortar, the math is 21 feet in length and breadth, and the large temple stands 15 meters tall. The peak of the temple’s circular, dome-shaped roof features a Trishul (trident). Each main sanctum room is attached to a veranda.
