Jagaddal Vihara is an ancient archaeological site located in Dhamoirhat Upazila, 52 kilometers away from Naogaon district headquarters. This nearly 900-year-old architectural landmark is also known to locals as the ruins of the Batakrishna Zamindar House. Originally, Jagaddal Mahavihara was a Buddhist monastery and educational center established around the 11th to 12th century. According to historical sources, in the 11th century, King Rampal defeated Bhim to recover his beloved ancestral homeland of Varendra, established the capital Ramabati near Paharpur for the common people, and founded Jagaddal Mahavihara (university) for the spread of education. Established in the latter half of the Pala rule, this important monastery in ancient Bengal for education and culture saw renowned scholars such as Bibhutichandra, Acharya Danshil, Acharya Mokshakar Gupta, and Subhakar Gupta engaged in learning and research. This monastery is mentioned in various Dharmamangal poems of ancient Bengal and in Niharranjan Ray’s Bangalir Itihas (History of the Bengali People).
