Historic Mung Rajbari, the ancient ancestral home of the Mung King, is located in Manikchhari Upazila, 36 kilometers southwest of Khagrachhari district town. The Mung are one of the various indigenous communities that have lived in the hilly regions of the Chittagong Hill Tracts for centuries. In ancient times, this ethnic group, known as the Mung royal dynasty, had a separate autonomous royal administration. In 1796, in the Mahamuni area of Manikchhari Upazila in Khagrachhari, King Kongjoy married a princess of the Tripura royal family. Later, he came to Manikchhari from Sitakunda along with 500 Tripura families and established Mung Rajbari for the members of the royal family to live in. This marked the beginning of the Mung royal family’s journey in Manikchhari, starting from Kongjoy’s reign. When King Kongjoy Tripura died in 1826, his 7-year-old son Kiojai Sen ascended the vacant throne under the guardianship of his uncle Lhotanyanya. Later, the British government appointed Kiojai Sen as the chief of the Mung Circle. After Kiojai Sen, other descendants of the royal dynasty were successively appointed as the chief of the Mung Circle and continued to govern the state. Mung Pru Sain, the seventh king of the Mung dynasty, was conferred the title of “Honorary Colonel” for his special contribution to the Liberation War.
