During the 1971 Liberation War, Bengalis faced inhumane torture by the Pakistani occupation forces. At that time, Mirpur remained blockaded for about a month and a half, turning many of its locations into killing fields as a tragic consequence of brutal Pakistani atrocities. On 15 November 1999, excavations across various parts of Mirpur initiated by the Liberation War Museum led to the discovery of the Jalladkhana Killing Field in Mirpur 10. Later in 2008, through the overall planning of architect and poet Rabiul Husain under the then government and the efforts of the Liberation War Museum, the Jalladkhana Killing Field Memorial Reading Room was established. Located in Mirpur 10, Dhaka, this killing field stands as a timeless witness to the savage atrocities committed by Pakistan against Bengalis during the Liberation War. Countless tortured Bengalis were buried in mass graves at this killing field, which is one of the largest in Bangladesh.
