Achranga Dighi, a traditional relic of ancient civilization, is located in Mahmudpur Union of Khetlal Upazila in Joypurhat district. According to locals, during the reign of Mauna Bhatta, the landlord of the ancient dynasty of Tahirpur in Rajshahi district, agricultural lands became almost unsuitable for cultivation due to low rainfall. Mauna Bhatta dug this dighi (lake) in the mid-9th century (around 817 AD) to make the agricultural lands suitable for cultivation. Spanning an area of about 26 acres, Achranga Dighi is 1,000 feet in length and 1,070 feet in width. Aman paddy used to be cultivated in this region in the Bengali month of Agrahayan using the water of Achranga Dighi. At the beginning of Paush, the fields looked wonderfully beautiful when the paddy ripened and turned red, and that is why this upazila was named Khetlal.
