Located 9 kilometres from Saidpur in Nilphamari district, this is the northern region’s first and oldest Roman Catholic Church. Built in 1886, the church was established for Anglo-Indian Catholic and Protestant Christians working on the Saidpur Railway. In the past, Saidpur was a hub of business and commerce. Following the establishment of the Assam Bengal Railway during the British colonial period, Saidpur’s importance grew significantly. A small loco shed was established just north of the railway station, and a railway workshop was developed around the loco shed spanning about 110 acres of land. Alongside Bengalis and Biharis, British and Anglo-Indian Roman Catholics and Protestants worked in the railway workshop. To facilitate worship for the Christian employees, the British government built two churches combining Roman and European architectural styles at both ends of Shaheb Para.
