Located in the Akon House in Burirchar village, north of Mathbaria in Pirojpur district, the wood-carved Momin Masjid is a remarkable architectural masterpiece. Among the world’s most visually stunning mosques, the century-old Momin Masjid of Mathbaria ranks 23rd and is South Asia’s only wooden Muslim architectural structure. In 1913, Moulvi Momin Uddin Akon began constructing the mosque at his home with the help of 21 artisans brought from Swarupkati in the then Barisal district. Momin Masjid was built using rare ironwood and Burma teak, finished with natural colors. The wooden walls of the mosque exquisitely showcase captivating designs of Islamic culture, calligraphy, along with various flowers, leaves, and fruits. After about 7 years of relentless effort, the construction of Momin Masjid—a blend of Indo-Persian and European architecture—was completed in 1920.
