দলবেঁধে নদীতে মাছ ধরা গ্রাম বাংলার প্রাচীন এক ঐতিহ্য। শুষ্ক মৌসুমে অর্থাৎ প্রতি বছরের আশ্বিন মাস থেকে অগ্রহায়ণ মাস পর্যন্ত হবিগঞ্জ জেলার বানিয়াচং এবং বিশ্বনাথ উপজেলার দেওকলস, দশঘর, দৌলতপুর, মাদাই প্রভৃতি বিল ও হাওরে পলো বাইছ উৎসব (Polo Bawa Utshob) আয়োজন করা হয়। বাঁশ দিয়ে তৈরি এক বিশেষ ধরণের ঝাঁপি বা মাছ ধরার ফাঁদকে “পলো” বলা হয়। গ্রামের মানুষ মাছ শিকার ছাড়াও বিভিন্ন দৈনন্দিন কাজে পলো ব্যবহার করে থাকেন। সারাবছর ধরে শৌখিন শিকারিরা পলো বাইছ উৎসবের জন্য অপেক্ষা করে থাকেন।
Fishing in groups in rivers is an ancient tradition of rural Bengal. During the dry season, from the Bengali month of Ashwin to Aghrahayan every year, the Polo Baich Festival is organized in the bills and haors of Baniachong upazila in Habiganj district and Deoklos, Dashghar, Doulatpur, Madai and other areas in Bishwanath upazila. A special type of bamboo-made basket or fishing trap is called a “polo”. Village people use polos for various daily tasks besides catching fish. Hobbyist hunters wait all year round for the Polo Baich Festival.
