Adamjee Jute Mills, located in Sumilpara of Shiddhirganj in Narayanganj district, was once known as the second-largest jute mill in East Pakistan. In the past, this jute mill was also called the ‘Dundee of the East’. In 1950, Adamjee Jute Mills was established on about 297 acres of land on the banks of the Shitalakshya River in Narayanganj, through a joint venture of three brothers of the wealthy Adamjee family of then-Pakistan. The year following its establishment, on 12 December 1951, the jute mill started commercial production with 1,700 Hessian and 1,000 Sacking looms. Later, after Adamjee Jute Mills Limited released its shares, about 3,300 looms were installed here.
