বরিশাল জেলা সদর থেকে মাত্র ৪ কিলোমিটার দূরে ঐতিহাসিক বঙ্গবন্ধু উদ্যান বা বেলস পার্ক অবস্থিত (Bangabandhu Udyan/Bell’s Park)। ১৮৯৬ সালে জেলা ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট হিসেবে এন.ডি.বিটসন বেলস বরিশালে আসেন। বেলসের শাসনামলে ব্রিটিশ রাজা পঞ্চম জর্জের আগমনকে কেন্দ্র করে কীর্তনখোলা নদীর কিনারে এই উদ্যানটি নির্মাণ করা হয়। বরিশাল শহরের উন্নয়ন, মুসলিম শিক্ষা ও জনস্বাস্থ্যে বিটসন বেলসের অবদানের স্বীকৃতি স্বরূপ তার নামানুসারে উদ্যানটির নাম হয় বেলস পার্ক। বিভিন্ন সময় অনেক রাষ্ট্রীয় গণ্যমান্য ব্যাক্তি এই পার্কে তাদের মূল্যবান ভাষণ দিয়েছেন। ১৯৭২ সালে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবর রহমানের দেওয়া ভাষণকে স্মরণীয় করে রাখতে এই পার্কে একটি মুক্ত মঞ্চ ও ম্যুর্যাল স্থাপন করা হয়। ১৯৯৬ সালে বাংলাদেশ সরকার বেলস পার্কের নাম পরিবর্তন করে বঙ্গবন্ধু উদ্যান রাখা হয়। বর্তমানে বরিশাল সিটি কর্পোরেশন গণপূর্ত অধিদপ্তরের অধীনে থাকা এই উদ্যানটি পরিচালনা করেন।
The historic Bangabandhu Udyan, also known as Bell’s Park (Bangabandhu Udyan/Bell’s Park), is located just 4 kilometers away from Barishal district headquarters. In 1896, N. D. Beatson Bell came to Barishal as the district magistrate. This park was built along the banks of the Kirtankhola River on the occasion of the visit of British King George V during Bell’s administration. In recognition of Beatson Bell’s contribution to the development of Barishal city, Muslim education, and public health, the park was named Bell’s Park after him. Over time, many prominent state dignitaries have delivered valuable speeches in this park. To commemorate the speech given by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1972, an open stage and a mural were established in this park. In 1996, the Government of Bangladesh renamed Bell’s Park to Bangabandhu Udyan. Currently, the Barishal City Corporation manages this park under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department.
