Connecting Bhuyanpur in the eastern part of Bangladesh to Sirajganj district in the west, the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge is also well known as the Bangabandhu Bridge. Inaugurated in June 1998, this bridge is the 6th largest in South Asia and the 11th longest in the world. Although the foundation stone of the Jamuna Bridge was laid in 1994 with the assistance of the Japanese government, its construction was completed in 1998. Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani was the first to demand the construction of a bridge over the Jamuna River, while Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina implemented it. The construction of the Bangabandhu Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge has led to significant improvements in the transportation of passengers and goods by road and rail, alongside the socio-economic development of the country.
