Located on the banks of the Kopotaksho River in Maheshpur Upazila of Jhenaidah District, the Khalishpur Neelkuthi Bhavan is a notable archaeological site. At the beginning of indigo cultivation in the Indian subcontinent, the British East India Company constructed a two-story indigo factory building on a 14-acre area in Khalishpur. From 1810 to 1858, this Neelkuthi was used to oppress indigo farmers. Angered by the atrocities committed by the English against the indigo farmers, the peasants initiated the Indigo Revolt in the subcontinent in 1860. However, while the British sold off other Neelkuhi buildings, they could not sell the Khalishpur Neelkuthi Bhavan due to the farmers’ revolt. The indigo factory left behind by the British was later used by landlords as a kachari (administrative office) room.
