Mahamuni Buddhist Vihara is located on a hill in the village of Paharatali, Mahamuni, under Raozan Upazila in Chattogram District. It is believed that in 1813, a Buddhist spiritual leader named Chaingga Thakur established this Buddhist monastery by installing a statue of Gautama Buddha. Because of this, the temple was named Mahamuni, associating it with the name of Gautama Buddha. On the other hand, Dr. Ramchandra Barua mentioned in his book “Chittagong-er Moger Itihas Pragukta” that the temple and statue of Mahamuni Buddhist Vihara were built in 1805. Although the exact founding date of the Mahamuni Buddhist Vihara remains uncertain, there is no doubt that this structure is a historical landmark nearly 200 years old.
