Located about 7 kilometres away from Bohaddarhat in the southern part of Chattogram city, Kalurghat Bridge is a heritage site. During World War I (in 1914), the need for a bridge over the Karnaphuli River arose for troop movement. As part of bridge construction, in 1930, a company named Brunton and Company Bridge Builders Howrah started building the bridge. Although the 700-yard-long Kalurghat Bridge was inaugurated in 1930 exclusively for train movement, a deck was installed on the bridge during World War II to facilitate vehicular traffic. After the partition of the country, in 1958, the bridge was made suitable for all types of vehicles, giving it its current form. The Kalurghat Bridge has two abutments, six brick pillars, twelve steel pillars, and nineteen spans.
