Mathin’s Well is located within the premises of Teknaf Police Station, close to the banks of the Naf River in Teknaf Upazila of Cox’s Bazar. In the late 18th century, there was only one potable water well to meet the water shortage in Teknaf. Rakhine young women used to come every day to fetch water from this well in the police station yard. Police officer Dheeraj Bhattacharya was transferred to this police station from Kolkata. Mathin, the daughter of a Rakhine landlord, also used to come here to collect water along with everyone else. By chance, a romantic relationship developed between Dheeraj and Mathin, and the two decided to get married. But suddenly news came of Dheeraj’s father’s illness. So Dheeraj wanted to return to Kolkata, but Mathin tried to stop him from going. Mathin had a fear that Dheeraj might not return from Kolkata. However, Dheeraj left for Kolkata without informing Mathin. After the departure of her beloved, Rakhine landlord’s daughter Mathin spent a long time counting the hours, and sacrificed her beautiful life forever due to insomnia and starvation, eventually embracing death.
