Char Kukri Mukri is located at the estuary of the Meghna River close to the Bay of Bengal, about 120 km from Bhola town. It is known as one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in Bangladesh. In the past, this char had a large population of dogs and rats (known locally as mekur), which is why it came to be known as Char Kukri Mukri among the locals. On 14 May 1989, under the supervision of the Forest Department, afforestation of reserved pneumatophoric mangrove trees began on about 360,000 acres of land. The forest land of Char Kukri Mukri features Sundari, Gewa, Pashur, Keora, coconut, bamboo, and cane. Currently, the forest area in Kukri Mukri char is 8,565 hectares, of which 217 hectares are wildlife sanctuaries, and about 4,810 hectares are for settlements and agricultural cultivation.
