Lal Dighi is one of the heritage sites of Chittagong city. Located at the end of Jail Road within ward number 32 of Chittagong City Corporation, Lal Dighi is surrounded by Anderkilla, the Zila Parishad building, and some local bank branches. After the administration of Chittagong was handed over to the East India Company in 1761, the land revenue office (currently the Metropolitan Police Office) was painted red. At that time, it became known as “Lalkuthi” (Red House). Later, the jail located to the east of Lalkuthi was also painted red and became known as “Lalghar” (Red Room). Consequently, the pond (dighi) beside Lalghar and Lalkuthi came to be known as Lal Dighi.
