To commemorate the visit of George Baring Northbrook, the Viceroy and Governor-General of India, to Dhaka in 1874, Northbrook Hall was built in the Farashganj area on the banks of the Buriganga River, featuring a unique blend of Mughal architecture and European craftsmanship. Initially constructed as a town hall, Northbrook Hall was later converted into a public library with a clubroom named Johnson Hall. Due to its red exterior, the building has been known as Lalkuthi (Red Bungalow) by locals ever since its construction. On February 7, 1926, the Dhaka Municipality gave a civic reception to the Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore at Northbrook Hall.
