শহীদ মিনার বায়ান্নর ভাষা আন্দোলনের গৌরবোজ্জল ধারক স্মৃতিসৌধ। ঢাকা মেডিক্যাল কলেজের পাশেই কেন্দ্রীয় শহীদ মিনার (Central Shaheed Minar) অবস্থিত। ১৯৫২ সালের ২১ শে ফেব্রুয়ারী “রাষ্ট্রভাষা বাংলা চাই” দাবীতে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্র ও প্রগতিশীল রাজনৈতিক কর্মীদের একটি মিছিল ১৪৪ ধারা ভঙ্গ করে ঢাকা মেডিক্যাল কলেজ এলাকায় প্রবেশ করে, তখন তাদের উপর নির্বিচারে গুলি বর্ষন করা হয়। সে সময় গুলিতে সালাম, জব্বার, রফিক সহ নাম না জানা অনেকেই শহীদ হন। তাদের স্মৃতির উদ্দেশ্যে ২৩ ফেব্রুয়ারি মেডিকেল কলেজের ছাত্র হোস্টেলের ১২ নম্বর শেডের পূর্ব প্রান্তে প্রথম শহীদ মিনার নির্মাণ করা হয়।
The Shaheed Minar is a monument that proudly bears the legacy of the Language Movement of 1952. The Central Shaheed Minar is located right beside Dhaka Medical College. On February 21, 1952, a procession of Dhaka University students and progressive political activists demanding “Bangla as the state language” entered the Dhaka Medical College area defying Section 144, when police opened indiscriminate fire on them. At that time, Salam, Jabbar, Rafiq, and many others whose names remain unknown were martyred by the bullets. In memory of them, the first Shaheed Minar was constructed on February 23 at the eastern end of shed number 12 of the medical college student hostel.
