Kobi Sukanta Bhattacharya’s House is located in Unshia village of Kotalipara upazila in Gopalganj district. The revolutionary young poet Sukanta Bhattacharya possessed a progressive consciousness in Bengali literature. Poet Sukanta was born on 15 August 1926 at Mahim Halder Street in Kolkata. His father, Nibaran Bhattacharya, worked in the postal department of Madaripur. In 1946, when poet Sukanta Bhattacharya’s father left his job and moved to Kolkata, this house became deserted. Later, Deben Bhattacharya, the last male of the lineage and an uncle of Sukanta, tried to protect the house left behind by his father and uncle for some time, but it eventually fell into the hands of illegal occupants. At one point, upon the directive of the Deputy Commissioner of Gopalganj, local responsibility was taken to preserve the house. In 2010, the ancestral house of poet Sukanta Bhattacharya, with a heritage of about 500 years, was renovated to establish the Kobi Sukanta Public Library-cum-Auditorium.
