Shahid Sagar is a living witness to the brutality and genocide committed by the Pakistani army at the North Bengal Sugar Mill in the Ajampur area of Gopalpur in Natore District on May 5, 1971. Pakistani soldiers took over a hundred officers, employees, and workers of the sugar mill hostage at gunpoint and massacred them by open-firing on the bank of the pond in front of the sugar mill’s guest house. On that day, the water of the pond, known as Gopal Sagar, was dyed red with the blood of the martyrs, although a few people managed to survive by sheer luck. After the country gained independence, this pond, laden with painful memories, was named Shahid Sagar. On May 5, 1973, in memory of the martyrs, the Shahid Sagar Monument and a flower garden to the east of the monument were established. A memorial museum was built at the Shahid Sagar square on May 5, 2000. Every year on May 5, North Bengal Sugar Mill Genocide Day is observed through various events to commemorate the martyrs of Gopalpur.
