The traditional Kanai Bolai Dighi is located in Kachipara Union of Bauphal Upazila in Patuakhali District. This dighi (pond) was excavated to meet the locals’ shortage of drinking water. Kanai Bolai Dighi is approximately 200 meters long and 140 meters wide. Various folk tales are associated with this nearly 300-year-old pond. Legend has it that about a hundred years ago, two Hindu brothers named Kanai and Bolai lived in Kachipara village. One day, mistaking them for date palm tree bark, the two brothers sat on two giant snakehead (gachol) fish. Afterwards, the fish took the two brothers into deep water. The two brothers were never seen again. Since this incident, the pond has come to be known as Kanai Bolai Dighi. Again, according to many, if someone wishes for something near this pond with a good heart and honest intentions, it is fulfilled, and if anyone disrespects or speaks ill of Kanai Bolai Dighi, danger befalls them.
