Located in Raipur Upazila, 15 kilometers away from Lakshmipur district, the Raipur Fish Hatchery and Training Centre is the largest in Bangladesh and one of the largest in Asia. It was established in Raipur in 1979 with the aim of breeding and supplying fish fry and spawn to the country’s main canals. Later, artificial fish breeding began at the hatchery in 1982, and from 1992, the centre started commercial fish production. From 1979 to 1992, this centre was known as the district’s largest fish breeding centre under the Noakhali Regional Development Project by the Danish development agency DANIDA. Currently, the Raipur Fish Hatchery and Training Centre is one of the three fish breeding centres in the country operated under the direct supervision of the Department of Fisheries.
