১৯২১ সালের ১ জুলাই রাজধানী ঢাকার শাহবাগে প্রায় ৬০০ একর জমির উপর ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় (University of Dhaka) যাত্রা শুরু করে। বাংলাদেশের প্রথম প্রতিষ্ঠিত এই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে তৎকালীন সময়ে ৩ টি ফ্যাকাল্টি, ১২ টি বিভাগ, ৬০ জন শিক্ষক এবং ৮৭৭ জন শিক্ষার্থী ছিল। বর্তমানে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ১৩ টি ফ্যাকাল্টি, ৮৪ টি বিভাগ এবং ১২ টি ইনস্টিটিউটে প্রায় ৪৬,০০০ শিক্ষার্থী এবং ১,৮০৫ জন শিক্ষক রয়েছে৷ প্রতিষ্ঠার পর থেকেই প্রগতিশীলতার ধারক ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের তারুণ্যের উন্মত্ততা বহু ঐতিহাসিক ঘটনাকে জন্ম দিয়েছে। মেধা ও মননে বিকশিত বিদ্যার্থীদের পদচারনায় ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় খ্যাত হয়ে উঠে প্রাচ্যের অক্সফোর্ড হিসাবে।
On July 1, 1921, the University of Dhaka began its journey on about 600 acres of land in Shahbag, the capital city Dhaka. As the first established university in Bangladesh, it had 3 faculties, 12 departments, 60 teachers, and 877 students at the time. Currently, the University of Dhaka has 13 faculties, 84 departments, and 12 institutes with nearly 46,000 students and 1,805 teachers. Since its inception, the University of Dhaka, as a bearer of progressivism, has given birth to many historical events through the exuberance of its youth. With the footsteps of students developed in intellect and mindset, the University of Dhaka became known as the Oxford of the East.
